When Durable Sheets Fail: What Happens After Manufacturing

Myth: sheets engineered to withstand commercial use are guaranteed to last longer, right? Well, it depends.

Even the most durable sheet can become unusable prematurely if not carefully handled. Some of the more common culprits are:

Chemical degradation- develops during the wash cycle either due to excessive chemical concentrations, high wash temperatures, extreme pH levels, or chlorine bleach, which cause cotton and flax fibers to break down and the fabric to lose its strength over time.

Chemical staining- in healthcare, this occurs due to a reaction between surgical scrub chemicals and chlorine bleach, while in hospitality, stains can appear when skincare products come in touch with the bedding. Unlike chemical degradation, chemical staining immediately renders an otherwise perfectly good sheet aesthetically unacceptable.

Mechanical strain- occurs due to continuous exposure to washer tumbling, extraction, drying, and ironing, leading to surface damage and tears. Mechanical strain can also be caused by an uneven tension of a tucked sheet.

Manufacturing determines the sheet's potential durability. How it's laundered and used determines whether it reaches that potential.
